Browse through the list of the up-coming competitions the club will be attending in the 2011/12 season for full details.
The club aims to provide opportunities for rowers of all abilities and the rowing calendar is packed with numerous competitions both locally and nationally which the various squads train to compete at in the appropriate categories.
The autumn/winter season sees the focus on heads races, long distance races, which are individually timed often over 5-10km. The spring/summer season sees the classical style of regatta racing where crews lane race directly against other crews on a set short distance course normally either 1km or 2km. The latter races form the main bulk of the rowing calendar and are often the main focus for many clubs going into the autumn/winter training programmes. Alongside these many clubs hold sprint races and boat races as with our own Universities Boat Race often undertaken in early-late march. As with all races crews are separated into different categories with progression to the next category depending on the number of points or average points a crew comprises of won at specific events and recorded on a racing licences. Therefore to compete each rower must purchase a racing licence which can either be annually, 6 monthly or an on the day licence.
The progression of points and categories is as follows for Scotland:
Novice
Restricted 2 (R2)
Restricted 1 (R1)
Elite
These categories vary compared to England and the rest of the UK and therefore the following useful link will explain and compare the different categories and points scoring systems.
