Welcome to the Aberdeen University Boat Club

We are run by students, for students and our success is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of all those involved in rowing for Aberdeen University.

Aberdeen University Boat Club is the largest and one of the most successful clubs at the University of Aberdeen. First founded in 1870 the club has seen a rich history  seeing the likes of national and international athletes pass through its boathouse. Situated on the banks of the River Dee the club prides itself in delivering the sport of rowing and encourages rowers of all abilities to achieve their potential. Everyone is welcome, from those who have never tried rowing, wanting a paddle on a Wednesday afternoon to more hardened athletes looking to improve fitness and represent the University at local, national and international events. Membership is open to all and you need not be a student to row at the club.

The club regularly meets on a Wednesday afternoons and weekends at the boathouse with water outings depending on the tidal pattern of the River Dee. The club is divided into four squads with senior/novice men’s and women’s captains organising each squad. Alongside the captains coxes help with training which is provided throughout the week by the captains and coaches tailored to each individual squads needs and abilities. Alongside this a healthy competitive relationship is maintained with the Robert Gordon University Boat Club (RGUBC), also situated on the River Dee, which culminates in the annual Aberdeen Asset Management Universities Boat Race and boat race ball. Aberdeen University retained the title again this year staving off tough competition from RGUBC to win the 14 of  16 years the event has been running.

Many other occasions also highlight the rowing calendar with regular attendance at local and national events from Inverness to London. Alongside these a thriving social scene is upheld with numerous functions, fund raising events and training camps.

Rowing is a fantastic sport, a great way of staying fit, meeting new people and developing the skills to become a young professional. If you are interested in rowing at Aberdeen, want to know more about the sport in general, or are just thinking of staying in shape while enjoying student life in Aberdeen, we are the club for you, please contact us. There has never been a better time to row for Aberdeen University.
